Milly wondered if Rupert had landed in molasses because he had been inside the apartment about as long as it took Tilly to proof dough—and that was a long time. <Rupert,> Milly said with as much patience she could muster, <where are you?>

Not every cat had access to the Link, but they had spared no expense when modding Rupert all those years ago. <The plant in the bedroom smells very unique. I have to pay extra attention to it. It doesn’t smell like a fern at all. It has almost a soapy scent to it…Oh Jupiter’s moons, is this cilantro?>

Milly squeezed her eyes shut and counted to ten. <How can you confuse a fern and cilantro? Plus, cilantro is great, so long as it’s not the Sirius variety.>

Rupert didn’t answer her question directly. <Oh NoJ, it is cilantro. I have to wash my tongue. I’m never getting this taste out!>

Milly sighed and tried to control her temper. The last thing she expected was to hear someone calling her name. “Milly? Tilly? Is that you?”

Oh, buttered biscuits! Someone had seen her? She opened her eyes to see the one and only Linda Margaret staring at her, the woman’s face half obscured by a dapper hat and sunglasses, but she lifted the latter off her eyes and gave Milly an enthusiastic wave. “Funny seeing you up here! Thought you lived above your shop.”

“Oh, I do. Morning, Linda Margaret. I was just paying my respects to Mr. Henderson. Or was going to. He’s not home.” Milly sure did hope her web of lies and deceit wouldn’t catch up with her!

“Oh, such a shame about poor Florence. I heard the service is today. I do hope at the very least, a few people show up.” Linda Margaret grimaced. “You know what they say about her? Meanest broad in all the stations around the NoJ. And that’s saying something.”

It sure was. “Any idea how she ended up like that?”

“Happened over the years. Started with the feud with her mother. Before you and Tilly moved to Fennington. Only her father would tolerate her, and only because Florence reminded him of his dear old mother.” Linda Margaret shuddered.

Milly shuddered too.

“Anyway, rumor is that he gave all his money to her and cut Jimmy out completely. Jimmy being her brother of course.”

“Of course,” Milly said. “And it’s not rumor. It’s true.”

Linda Margaret’s eyes widened. “Fascinating! Well, I do hope she gets some peace now in the afterlife—if there is such a thing.”

“As do I.”

“Well, I guess I should get going. I am all dressed up. Maybe I should hurry over to the service today and pay my respects to John. Oh, by the way, that hat you want, sixty percent off. Just stop by and its yours.”

Right, the hat. “I will, Linda Margaret. Some other day. Maybe tomorrow.”

Linda Margaret chuckled softly to herself. “And people tell me that I can’t make up my mind.” Her face fell for a brief moment.
